Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Policy

The Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Policy applies principles to planning, design, renovation, operation, and maintenance of University property in order to reduce crime opportunity, improve safety and security, support legitimate use of University spaces, and reduce fear of crime.

Overview of Policy Changes:

• The updated policy adds an exclusion for approved design exceptions when justified by documented operational need, site conditions, historic preservation considerations, or architectural constraints, provided compensatory security measures are reviewed and approved through the established process.
• The updated policy adds responsibilities for facilities management and supporting departments and project managers, designers, and departments sponsoring construction or renovation.
• The updated policy includes the principles of natural surveillance, natural access control, territorial reinforcement, maintenance & image management, activity support, and security technology coordination.
• The updated policy adds landscaping standards – landscaping should be maintained to preserve sight lines and reduce concealment opportunities while supporting the safe and legitimate use of University property.
• The updated policy includes a new section on Project Review – A CPTED review should be conducted for new construction, major renovation, site redevelopment, or significant changes.
• The updated policy adds incident-driven reviews – as needed CPTED reviews where recurring incidents, repeated complaints, or significant changes in campus use occur.
